It’s like “scrabble” with an “o” January 9, 2007

I kind of like the way Last.fm makes me feel really, extremely self-conscious about the music I listen to. “Self-conscious” always sounds like a negative term, but in this case I mean it in a good, increased-self-awareness kind of way. I like “scrobbling,” and I like trying to predict what will be in my top 10 for the week based solely on what I remember listening to or feeling like that week. It’s like a game really, and I try to, you know, surprise myself.

I also know that, otherwise, I would probably end up listening to Junior Boys, She Wants Revenge, and Peter Bjorn & John (or whatever other music I’m jocking that month) over and over again, all day long, until I tire of them and find them unlistenable for the next three months. I’m pre-disposed to that sort of behaviour: I’ve been listening to the same Hollertronix album in my car for about 2 months now (maybe longer) and will most likely need to hide it somewhere for a year once I’ve had enough. The CDs in my car more or less act as a back up, though, for when I don’t feel like digging through my gigantic bag for my ipod or when the distance I am driving doesn’t justify the effort (but I realize that most of the distances I drive rarely do).

Not to mention that I don’t even have to try to list my music interests on things like MySpace or anywhere else that encourages that really anymore… just copy, paste, and scrobble. And a side note: I’ve had this last.fm account since June 2005 and then I didn’t use it for a year. That was pretty interesting to come back to and see what I was listening to on repeat then (a lot of it is the same actually… – Blockhead and Boards of Canada).

Look, here’s what I’m listening to right now!:

(It looks like a screenshot, but it’ll scrobble, I promise)
