I would definitely go see this even though it will likely be very terrible, and more than likely wont ever happen… March 29, 2007

There’s been talk recently about a broadway production/musical of the cinematic masterpiece from everyone’s 80s-based childhood The Goonies. I actually can’t believe this hasn’t happened yet. The movie has been around, delighting youngsters and grownups alike, since 1985 and theyre only just now thinking of adapting it for the stage?!

“But what Goonies lovers really want to know is, Will we ever see Chunk, Data, and Mouth in another incarnation? Believe it or not, we very well might — as a musical. The film’s director, Richard Donner (16 Blocks), says there is an active attempt to mount a musical adaptation of the original, which was written by Chris Columbus from Steven Spielberg’s story. ”Steven and I have discussed it, and it’s something that I’m fairly passionate about right now,” Donner tells us. “

I can’t even imagine what a Broadway version of The Goonies would be like! How would they portray the little girl bike scene? What about the pirate ship? Would they build a giant waterslide? Could Cindy Lauper play Rosalita? Would they include the squid scene or not?!

Personally, I wouldn’t go unless there was a Sloth musical number. And the probability of that happening is less than the chances of the musical actually becoming a reality.

Here’s a list of other movies from my childhood that I would also like to see adapted into musicals:

Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveler – He travels around the world on a postage stamp during the hey-day of philately; A dance number in China! A touching solo in Australia! Imagine the diverse cast!

The Peanut Butter Solution – This movie is the source of all my current adult fears, and I think I could finally face it if it were paired with wonderful choreography and a compelling score.

The Neverending Story – Was this already made into a musical?

Big – The floor-piano scene for three hours.

Tron – “In the future video game battles will be a matter of life or death“… this is sooo relevant to our generation, day and age, etc.

Project X - Granted, this would require them to cast a chimpanzee as one of the leads, but Matthew Broderick could probably play the same character, since he looks like he’s about 18 years old still, and he’s got some musical under his belt.

Ladybugs -Boy dresses as girl to appease step-father (Rodney Dangerfield) and to help step-father get promotion by coaching successful girls soccer team — umm… sounds like Shakespeare potential to me!
