The “Best-Mannered” City in the U.S. since 1995 April 10, 2007

I went to Charleston, South Carolina this weekend, and I’ll tell you what, it was real neat. I’d heard good and bad things about the city, generally speaking, but I think I caught it on one of its better 3-days. It was cold, sunny, clear, and blue, with just enough stuff going on to keep me interested, but not too many tourists or to much southerny junk to annoy me, despite the Easter holiday and it being “the holy city.” And it was nothing like walking through bread (re: not humid).
We walked around pretty much the entire peninsula on Saturday: sat in Battery Park, saw the Open Market, visited the only USPS-issued R2D2 mailbox in town, ate fried green tomatoes at Hominy Grill, looked at the college’s cow-blood-covered buildings, took photos of an old jail, stood in front of some historic stuff, bought Solar Shields at a retromart called ‘Junk and Jive,’ strolled down narrow alleys that used to be roads, hung out with friends who live in Charleston as well as friends who live 25 minutes from me who I haven’t seen in 3 years, saw some pretty girthy steeples, drank beer in a bar with no sign, etc etc etc..
Look at the rest of these photos…
And then on Sunday, Alicia (aka: the love-of-my-life) made a giant vegan brunch with soysage fakegg and soycheese mcmuffins, mushroom hashbrowns, vegan waffles and hot bloobs. Basically, a lot of tofu shaped likereal foods. It was great.
You can see the whole photo set on Flickr! 78 total — not including the ‘roids. There are some good ones!

I gotta say that the “go stand in front of that historic tree” is totally adorable, even if it’s in a you-look-like-you’re-twelve kind of way.
How very civilized! The guy beside the mailbox looks like he’s saying, “Help me Obi-Wan, you’re my only hope!”
